History

In Balto

In the first Balto movie, Aniu appeared to her son, Balto, when he most needed her help. He had fallen off a cliff and landed on the snow, and had almost given up hope of getting the antitoxin to Nome. Through the blizzard, a great white wolf, larger than Balto, appeared before him and howled. This was Aniu. She turned and started to leave, but Balto picked himself up, and mother and son howled together. Balto saw that his pawprint matched hers--the pawprint of a wolf--and he was encouraged to use his wolf senses to make it through the storm.

In Balto II: Wolf Quest

In the 2002 animated film Balto II: Wolf Quest, by Universal Cartoon Studios, Aniu plays a much more predominant role. After Balto has several reoccurring nightmares involving a raven and a wolf pack over iceberg-filled waters, he sees a decorative Native American totem pole with a raven, fox, wolverine, and a bear. Raven, the Fox, the wolverine and the Bear. In Balto's visions and dreams, Aniu explains the roles of these animals to him. They become recurring themes in the movie as Aleu, his daughter, tries to find out who she is. When Aleu and Balto meet a pack of wolves, Aniu is described as a legendary wolf. Then, at the end, Aniu finally talks with Balto for a short time, and we discover that she is his mother and spirit guide.

Trivia

  • Aniu means "snow" in Inuit.
  • Some fans still dispute as to whether or not Aniu and the white wolf from the first film are the same wolf, even though director of Wolf Quest, Phil Weinstein, declared in an interview that they are in fact the same wolf.
